Learn how to create an assignment in Canvas, which will allow the Canvas assignment to be mapped to a NEW or EXISTING Gradient assignment. Mapping assignments allows students access to Gradient via Canvas and an automatic score pass back from Gradient into the Canvas gradebook.
- If Gradient has not yet been added as an external tool within Canvas for your team, please share our Integrations - Canvas Setup support article with your school/district Canvas Lead.
- By default, students can NOT see any Gradient assignments within Canvas until their teacher creates an online access window either for turning in an assignment or reviewing a graded assignment.
- Lockdown browser restrictions are also available for Gradient assignments that are mapped via Canvas.
Create a Canvas Assignment
Log in to Canvas and select the course. Select the + Assignment button.
Create New Assignment - Required Fields
- Assignment Name
- Points
- Submission Type
- Submission Attempts
Assignment Name
If mapping to an existing assignment in Gradient, it is helpful to use the same name, but not required to match.
Points
Points in Canvas should match the point value of the assignment in Gradient. If the point value in Canvas is different from the point value in Gradient, the score in Canvas will adjust with the appropriate scale factor to match your setting.
-
Example: If the test in Gradient is worth 5 points but in Canvas, it is set to 10 points (scale factor is 2), a student will receive the following scores in Canvas:
- 5 pts in Gradient = 10 pts in Canvas
- 4 pts in Gradient = 8 pts in Canvas
- 3 pts in Gradient = 6 pts in Canvas
- 2 pts in Gradient = 4 pts in Canvas
- 1 pt in Gradient = 2 pts in Canvas
Submission Type
- Select External Tool
- Select Find to search for and choose GradeCam/Gradient, then click the Select button.
Note: The name listed in Configure External Tool may vary. The name is configured by the school's Canvas administrator. Please get in touch with your district's Canvas administrator if you cannot find the Gradient option.
Submission Attempts
All Gradient assignments connected to Canvas must have the Submission Attempts Allowed Attempts setting set to Unlimited for the Grade Passback feature to function. It is not necessary to limit attempts in Canvas because students cannot retake a Gradient assignment unless the teacher reopens the assignment for an individual student or a class.
Save and/or Publish the Assignment
- Save & Publish - Creates online access for the assignment in Canvas (mapping step next).
- Save - Save the created assignment in Canvas without mapping to Gradient.

Grade Passback
When an assignment is created in Canvas, Schoology, or Jupiter and mapped to a Gradient assignment, grades scanned from paper forms will automatically be passed back to the Canvas, Schoology, or Jupiter gradebook.
Grade Passback involves scores linked to individual students that automatically reflect in Canvas, Schoology, or Jupiter gradebooks once the student has submitted the assignment.
Grade Transfer in Gradient involves copying and pasting assignment grades according to a predetermined sort order (alpha by name or numeric by student ID).
For best practice with Canvas specifically, schools or districts who leave “concluded” students on the roster in Canvas should use the automatic Grade Passback vs. Grade Transfer since the sort order of grades won’t match the student roster in Canvas
Resync Scores
To update grades, correct errors, or add missing grades in Canvas, Resync Scores from Gradient. Follow these steps to resync:
1. Click on a Gradient assignment so that it's filtered in the top left corner (you will automatically be brought to the Responses tab if responses have been collected).
2. Use the checkboxes before the student names to select all or individual students from the list.
Tip! Use the Class filter in the left panel to show and select students from only one class.
3. Click the More icon from the toolbar and click Resync Scores.
Student View
Students will select their course and choose their assignment in Canvas.
- The mapped Gradient assignment will open (based on the Turn In or Review windows set by the teacher).
- Students will see the Gradient Student Portal view of their assignment within Canvas.
Important Information
Deleting an assignment in Canvas does not delete OR remove access to the assignment in Gradient. A teacher must navigate to the Gradient assignment to remove online access.
