The feature(s) mentioned in this article are only available to Gradient for Individual Teachers - Teacher Premium or Teacher Limited (Free) accounts. If you are currently part of a Gradient for Schools/Districts subscription, rosters will be created and managed by the account's Gradient Leaders.
Gradient for Individual Teachers users can import a list of students into a class. Accepted file formats include CSV, XLS, and XLSX.
Access Individual Teachers Import File Template
Select the View Classes tile to go to the Classes page. Click on a class name you've created and then click the blue New button. From the drop-down menu, select Import Students for... From the Import Students pop-up window, click the linked import file template text and click the Make a copy button to make a copy of the template as a Google Sheet.
Import File Template Checklist
- The directions in Row 1, highlighted in yellow, must be read, followed, and deleted to have a successful import.
- All columns and column headers listed in the Individual Teachers Import File Template are required; *OPTIONAL = an optional column to populate with data.
- The column order and column headers must match the Import Students to a Class tab and/or the listed File Format for the import to be successful!
Note: If you create multiple tabs in one file, download each tab as a CSV file to import each tab individually.
Make a copy of the file template as a Google Sheet, or create your own file using the Import Students to a Class File Format section below.
File Format (Required Columns)
Student_First_Name |
List student's first name. Tip! Whatever is listed in this field will be required to be typed by students in order to log in to the Student Portal (if SSO isn't in use). |
Student_Last_Name |
List student's last name. Tip! Whatever is listed in this field will be required to be typed by students in order to log in to the Student Portal (if SSO isn't in use). |
Student_Middle_Name | *OPTIONAL - List student's middle name |
Student_ID |
List student's Unique ID, likely coming from your SIS. Student IDs must be unique and cannot be edited once created. Note: Once a Student ID number is used, it cannot be used again for another student. Tip! Use a minimum of 3 digits. |
GradeCam_ID |
*OPTIONAL - Student ID for bubbling on forms (must be numeric). This can be a shorter version of the Student ID or an alternate #. Tip! Use a minimum of 3 digits. |
Student_Email |
*OPTIONAL - Add student's email |
Note: *OPTIONAL = Optional column to populate with data (can be left blank), column and column header must be included in the file.
Select Class and Import Students to a Class
1. Log into your account and select the View Classes tile. |

2. Select the class you would like to import students for by clicking on the class title. | |
3. Click the blue New button.

4. Select the Import Students for... option from the drop-down menu. | |
5. Drag & Drop or browse the file from your device. | |
6. Preview the pending changes (or errors) and select Next. | |
7. Confirm the import by clicking the Run Import button. The import will run in the background. | |
8. When the import is complete, a notification will appear in the upper right corner. |
