Assisted Open Response questions provide teachers with suggested points, scores, and feedback based on a submitted rubric or scoring guidelines.
- Printed paper forms can include lines or a grid to capture the student’s written response, drawings, diagrams, and more
- Online assignments have an expandable rich text area for typed open responses
- All paper scans and online submissions are collected together for the teacher to review and provide a score using either a rubric or specific points, with the option to use suggested points and feedback
Create an Assisted Open Response Question
- From the Keys tab, select the question to open the question editor window (or check the box next to the question to Edit via the toolbar).
- Adjust the question type to Assisted Open Response.
- Add in Question Text - this should match what the actual question on the test document is
- Enter a Grading Rubric - this should be clear scoring criteria that clearly and concisely explain what each point value is worth.
- Adjust the Capture Area and Max Points.
- After adjusting the scoring method and capture area, SAVE AND CLOSE.
Note: if using Auto-Import, the presence of a grading rubric will automatically trigger Gradient to create an Assisted Grading Question, and will auto-complete those fields.
Score Student Responses
- After students submit an Assisted Grading Question, there may be a delayed Processing flag on the Responses page. When ready, the question will be flagged for Review.
- Select a student response, or By Question view.
- Each student response will have an option to Use Suggested Points, a snapshot of scanned responses or typed text, and a Graded as window with transcribed text. This Graded as text is what Gradient uses to suggest points.
- Hovering your mouse over the Use Suggested Points option will reveal Gradient's reasoning behind the suggested score, based on the Grading Rubric provided. Clicking will automatically assign the score to the response. You can also click the desired bubble if you don't wish to use the suggested points.
Provide Feedback on Student Responses
- As with Open Response Capture questions, teachers can leave feedback using a rich text field.
- On Assisted Open Response questions, you have the option to leave feedback generated by Gradient, based on the Suggested Points and Reasoning mentioned previously.
- To use generated feedback, click the Use Generated Feedback option above the feedback panel.
Note: Teachers can add additional text and resources to the generated feedback. Clicking the Use Generated Feedback option multiple times will not generate a new feedback option. It will populate with the same text.
Let Us Know Your Thoughts!
Every Assisted Open Response Question will have a button at the top of the scoring window asking for Thoughts on Assisted Grading.
Clicking this button will take you to a feedback window where you can let us know whether you liked or didn't like the results, and share more details about what worked and what didn't.
This feedback is incredibly valuable to our team and will help us make this tool as useful and helpful to you as possible.
