File Scanning in Gradient can be done when using any scanner that can send a file with grayscale images (BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIF, or PDF) of the student forms. The file is then dragged or uploaded into the assignment response window.
Note: Please ensure that you have only ONE form per page in the file. Combining multiple student forms on one page will prevent the file scanner from reading the forms properly.
Drag & Drop Scanned Files Method
1. Locate the assignment and navigate to the Responses tab.
2. Arrange the windows on your computer to drag the file and drop it within the assignment. A message will appear to drop the file within an area indicated by a blue dashed border.
Upload Using Icon
1. Select the Upload icon from the Scan window.
2. Either drag the file(s) into the area or choose to Select files from your computer and navigate to the file(s).
3. Files will begin scanning and grading. Once you are done adding files, select Done.
Best Practices for File Scanning
Printing Forms
- Print forms
- Single-sided
- Use pre-filled forms with class names, student names, and/or assignment names selected to prevent mistakes for students bubbling in their IDs, or with scanning.
- With a high-quality printer
Student Responses on Forms
- Instruct students to clearly bubble their answers (writing an x is not sufficient), to write only in the designated areas of the form (outside marks, doodling, and notes can cause scanning errors), and to erase completely when necessary.
- Ensure that students do not make any marks in the Form Identifier section or on the form bar codes, depending on the assignment type.
Configure Scanner
-
Files must be scanned in either color or grayscale (NOT black and white).
-
Every scanner has unique settings that vary. Refer to your scanner's resources for setting adjustments. Test a trial file scan with your forms and scanner before using it with students.
- The table below has examples of what a zoomed-in portion of a form looks like with both very high contrast (blank/white) and lower/medium contrast (grayscale):
Adjust Gradient Settings
- From your Account Menu > Settings > Scanning, change the File Scanning Mode drop-down field to Comprehensive, which slows down the scanning time, but may increase accuracy.
